Drinking Wine in the Underworld
Gwyneth LesleyAUTHOR’S NOTE ON THE MYTHS
As with all myths, there are many tales about the Greek God of Wine (and many more things). I’ve pulled most of the history in this novella from the Dionysiaca by the poet Nonnus, though I have taken some creative licence. Well, the characters did.
This tale revolves around Dionysus’ supposed first love, Ampelos. Ampelos was a handsome, young man (or Satyr, in some cases) who was loved by Dionysus. There are at least two accounts of his death. In one, he is slain by a wild bull due to other interfering gods and goddesses. In the other, he fell while picking grapes on a vine and was set amongst the stars by his love, Dionysus, as the constellation Vindemitor or Vindiatrix (better known as Boötes). We’re about to see what happened after Ampelos died and remade himself as Savvas – the winemaker of our story.
Let this be a version of events not to be treated as mythological fact, but as a whimsical trip to the Underworld you are yet to inhabit.
Also, please note that this story is the third in The Underworld Novellas. While not necessary, it is recommended to read them all in order for a full reading experience.
